Empire in Black and Gold: Shadows of the Apt Book One by Adrian Tchaikovsky (Paperback, 2008)
Empire in Black and Gold is the first novel in the Shadows of the Apt series. When his home is violently attacked, he is forced to send them ahead of him and, hotly pursued, they fly by airship to Helleron, the first city in line for the latest Wasp invasion. Stenwold and Che are Beetle-kinden, one of many human races that take their powers and inspiration each from a totem insect, but he also has allies of many breeds: Mantis, Spider, Ant, with their own particular skills.
Foremost is the deadly Mantis-kinden warrior, Tisamon, but other very unlikely allies also join the cause. As things go from bad to worse amid escalating dangers, Stenwold learns that the Wasps intend to use the newly completed railroad between Helleron and Collegium to launch a lightning strike into the heart of the Lowlands. Then he gathers all of his agents to force a final showdown in the engine yard Extra points for a It has a great and diverse cast of characters, intricate and original world-building, and very interesting ideas about war, technology, and magic.

The first book is Empire in Black and Gold. It comes as a shock some times to find yourself on the last sentence on the last page of the last book in a series. Last night I finished the last book of the Shadows of the Apt series.
Given that reading this series 10 books, pages each took about two months at least, this was a pretty major endeavor. Ahh, I came to a crashing halt somewhere in the middle of The Air War when I suddenly lost all interest and enthusiasm.

You really should, IMO. Anybody looking for a new book should go and check out the series of Shadows of the Apt. Adrian Tchaikovsky has this brilliantly devastating gift of making you fall in love with a character in two pages so you just feel like he ripped your heart out when he kills off that character after those two pages. Can probably be read without much knowledge of the books it spoils one character-related twist in Book 1, which is revealed fairly early, and you find out someone gets hurt at some point, which is not much of a spoiler in this series.
